About
My name is Naomi Daw and I am an independent researcher. I am particularly interested in popular culture and visual culture from the ‘long’ nineteenth century, with an emphasis on mass consumption, the democratisation of culture, and increased access to travel, whether direct travel or travel mediated through photography and writing. Fundamentally I am interested in how ordinary people use artistic mediums such as photography and literature to engage with, and understand, the world around them.
My background
I studied for Art History at the University of Sussex, achieving my BA in 2013 and my MA in 2015. Professionally, I have worked in a variety of roles including customer service, administration and teaching before joining the Sussex Archaeological Society as a Visitor Services Assistant at Lewes Castle and Anne of Cleves House. In 2018, I moved to what is now the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust as a Visitor Services Officer, and towards the end of my time there, as a Guide, working closely with the public at the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. I have had written work published in a variety of mediums including local press, journals, as a book chapter, and on my previous blog The Heritage Girl. I currently work in education and work on private research projects in my spare time.
